More than transportation routes, power grids and waste water systems
All material infrastructures – such as transportation routes, power grids and water supply systems – are tied to people's ideas and practices. Not only are they the result of human ingenuity and entrepreneurship, but they also impact social and cultural practices. The new book "Rethinking Infrastructure Across the Humanities", which is freely available online, delves into the cultural dimensions of infrastructure.
The authors of the book analyze the characteristics of integrative and sustainable infrastructures. This includes the question of how tangible and intangible properties of infrastructures interact. From different disciplinary perspectives, the articles examine language, concepts, ideologies and religion as immaterial infrastructures. They shed light on a wide range of phenomena, from clan structures to literary genres and dating apps.
